October 19, 2015

The Philippine automotive industry sales has grown 2 percent for September for year-on-year comparison. In a recent report issued by the joint Marketing Committee of the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc. (CAMPI) and the Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA), last month sales reached a record-breaking 27,045 units vs 20,924 in September 2014. Year-to-date automotive sales attained 206,284 units which is more than 21 percent higher than the 169,727 units sold during the same period last year.

All vehicle categories performed well last month. Passenger cars increased to 10,703 units and made an impressive 26 percent increase from September of previous year with 8,477 units. This rise is because of the continued marketing efforts and flexible financial options being offered to the consumers. There were also a few refreshed models introduced last month which helped the sales exceed its target.

Likewise, commercial vehicles sales strengthened with 16,366 units, up by 32 percent from 12,447 units in September last year. Within this sector, Categories 4 (Light Duty Trucks and Buses) and Category 5 (Heavy Duty Trucks and Buses) were the best performers. Category 4 sales achieved 62 percent growth with 252 units due to higher demand for public utility buses compared to 156 units for year-on-year comparison. Category 5 sales jumped by 428 percent to 132 units from only 25 units sold in the same month last year. Demand continued to come from construction companies undertaking re-fleeting and to new city projects.

In terms of year to date sales, Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation remains the market leader with 40.9 percent market share; followed by Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation with 18 percent. Reclaiming the third spot is Ford Group Philippines with 11.3 percent. Isuzu Philippines, Inc. is at fourth performing at 7.8 percent.
